This and her "rubber plant" were the two green spots in our house all during World War II.<br /><br />I look back at that time and wonder how we made it. Mom was supposed to get $3.00 a week in alimony but my dad seldom paid it as he didn't always have it to pay.<br /><br />So we mostly ate what we managed to grow and some Sears and Roebuck chickens mom bought each year. They arrived at the post office and I usually had to carry to flat box home. When the box was opened, the peeps were thirsty and hungry and chirped a lot. Usually one or two were dead in the box.
